Why didn't your friend call the police? She knows who has the phone and they can be tracked by their use of it. It will teach thieves a good lesson to have a uniformed officer show up on their doorstep with an identifying picture they took of themselves from your friends phone.
That should be pursued. The satisfaction of catching a theif is oh so sweet!

actually, the matter went to the police and the thieves were arrested. And, that's not my friend!
